i have always been using the ZIG writer for journalling. but lately realise that it does not write as well on cardstocks and transparencies. any recommendations for pens?

For transparencies, most definitely Slick Writer.

To write on transparencies and glossy surfaces, the Slick Writer or Galaxy Markers are great. For cardstocks with textured surfaces, you can try a brush tip or broader tip. Or write slower so that there is less "skip"
